We Are Redefining How People Approach Their Health
ZOE is combining scientific research at a scale never before imagined and cutting-edge AI to improve the health of millions.
Created by the world’s top scientists, our personalised nutrition program is radically reimagining a fundamental human need – eating well for your own body. Currently available in the US and the UK, having generated a waitlist of over 300,000, ZOE is already helping tens of thousands of ZOE members adopt healthier habits and achieve their goals.
We are also the team behind the popular COVID Symptom Study, which played a critical role in the fight against COVID in the UK and has now expanded to become the ZOE Health Study (ZHS). ZHS uses the power of community science to conduct large-scale research from the comfort of contributors’ homes to understand health and prevent disease. Our collective work and expertise in biology, engineering, data science, and nutrition science has led to multiple breakthrough papers in leading scientific journals such as Nature Medicine, Science, The Lancet, and more.
A remote-first, well-funded startup, we are backed by founders, investors, and entrepreneurs who have built multi-billion dollar technology companies. We are always looking for innovative thinkers and doers to join our team on a thrilling mission to tackle epic health problems that span the globe. Together, we can improve human health and touch millions of lives.
We value inclusivity, transparency, ownership, open-mindedness and diversity. We are passionate about delivering great results and learning in the open. We want our teams to have the freedom to make long-term, high-impact decisions, and the well-being of our teammates and the people around us is a top priority.
About the team
The Food Database Team is a small but critical team who work both independently and collaboratively in many areas. Our work is very detail-oriented and has a considerable impact on our users' food logging experience within the ZOE app. We work closely with Product, Engineering, and Data Science teams to ensure we provide the best user experience with a comprehensive and accurate food database.
What to expect
The Database Associate Level 1 role is a position with the main objective of ensuring we maintain our database at a high quality. We manage very large datasets of food items and recipes, so a background in nutrition is required. You will be working directly with the data to input, categorise and validate the accuracy of our food database to ensure we maintain, and improve our users experience when interacting with our databases.
We are looking for an exceptionally detail-oriented individual with a passion for working with data and nutrition. This role will be instrumental to our food database maintenance and improvement, and will require a large proportion of independent work. However, we ensure to meet regularly as a team, and with wider teams to align on projects and troubleshoot any issues together. You would suit this position if you enjoy getting your head down and focusing on detailed work, whilst appreciating the impact you are making on our users' experience.

You'll be...

  • Ensuring our food database is properly categorised and up-to-date
  • Managing food database updates in a timely and accurate manner
  • Inputting new food items requested by our users, including accurate nutritional information
  • Collaborating with various teams to ensure data quality and accuracy is maintained, and all tools are functioning correctly
  • Working to improve our recipe database by assessing accuracy and identifying and filling any gaps in our catalogue
  • Maintaining the organisation of large datasets
  • Innovating processes with new ways to improve efficiency, relevance and coverage of the food database, as well as possible improvements for user experience
  • Working in an agile and fast-paced environment, often on multiple projects simultaneously

We think this role would be a great fit if you...

  • Have a BSc or MSc in Nutrition or a joint honours that includes Nutrition e.g. Food Science and Nutrition
  • Have a passion for data, preferably with experience working with data sets either at university or in a workplace environment
  • Enjoy working independently at a high level of detail, but can collaborate well with others when needed
  • Have a high attention to detail, with a natural ability to problem solve and prioritise tasks with minimal supervision
  • Have an energetic work ethic, with a strong capability to thrive under pressure
Listed above is a snapshot of the experience, skills and attributes we think would come handy for the success in this role. Are you passionate about ZOE and this role but don't tick 100% of the boxes above? Please consider applying anyway. We are happy to up-skill where possible.
