Quantum Algorithm Developer (Mid-Senior level)

Quantum Algorithm Developer, Full time, Onsite – Amsterdam, the Netherlands
PASQAL
is a major player in the global quantum race. We are a full-stack company and the leading manufacturer of neutral atom quantum computers. Our offerings include quantum computing hardware, cloud access and software solutions for industries related to energy, mobility, healthcare, high tech, aerospace and finance. By embracing the dual analog/digital nature of our quantum computers, we are pushing quantum neutral atom technology forward in the hope of delivering a practical quantum advantage within the next two years.

PASQAL
in January 2023 announced a funding round of 100M Euros, and is growing their team of talented individuals working on relevant real-world industrial applications of quantum computing, together with our clients and collaborators. The team which focuses on developing applications with our collaborators is based in Amsterdam, a vibrant and livable city with international allure, and an active deep tech community.

As a Quantum Algorithm Developer, you will work among top scientists and developers in the quantum industry. You will also work with our full-stack quantum team in France coordinating projects to run on the reality of quantum hardware. This role is a mid-senior level role but will be supported by our senior engineers to assure your success and help you learn about our technology. Strong understanding of QML required for this role.

Your tasks:

  • Your starting project will involve taking the technical lead in solving an industrial application/problem using quantum algorithms previously developed by PASQAL in the field of quantum machine learning, under supervision of an experienced internal senior quantum algorithm developer. The problem is given by our collaborator-client, who is a technical domain-expert in the field of the problem and provides the classical benchmark.
  • In your work, you will be supported from the scientific side by a senior quantum algorithm scientist, who will provide guidance in structuring the problem on a quantum basis; aid with the technical implementation both in simulation and hardware implementation; brainstorm ideas for improvements; and more.
  • You will be supported on the project management side by a project manager, who will ensure alignment of project directions with contractual obligations, timelines and deliverables; time management; alignment of project with PASQAL's strategy throughout its lifetime; managing client expectations; client satisfaction management; administrative tasks; billing notifications; and more. This means your focus can be on the technical/scientific aspects of the project
  • You will start with a specific quantum machine learning project that combines optimization and learning in a single algorithm; you will implement existing paradigms for novel applications, as well as further extend the functionalities and performance
  • In a broader context, project topics at PASQAL include primarily algorithm R&D in the domains of differential equation solving, (graph) machine learning, optimization and simulation
  • The projects are primarily long-term R&D projects with clients and collaborators
  • Your position will be within the QML team which is within the R&D: Algorithms department
  • You will be involved in the interplay between algorithm and hardware teams, to develop quantum algorithmic applications suitable particularly for neutral atom quantum processors
  • You will employ a co-design ethos, in which your quantum algorithms are tailored to run in harmony with the specific capabilities of the neutral atom platform; this means taking into account the analog, digital-analog and digital functionalities of the platform, as well as required measures to compensate for noisy execution, such as error mitigation protocols
  • Work closely together with PASQAL’s use case teams to understand which application domains could potentially benefit from industrially relevant quantum advantage
  • Support business development efforts by participating in technical presentations and preparatory discussions for new client project leads, including matters of IP and workload

We'll provide training and provide technical experts as you get introduced to the company, algorithm portfolio and hardware specifics. This position will report to our Vice President Quantum Machine Learning. The work will be based on-site in our Amsterdam office (London/Paris option negotiable under exceptional circumstances).

What you will need to be successful in this role coming in:
Note: Candidates who can start in 1-2 months onsite in Amsterdam preferred. France would also be an option for a location for this role. No sponsorship available at this time for this role.

  • PhD in Quantum Computing, or related field (applied/theoretical physics, engineering, computer science, applied mathematics etc.) together with demonstrable quantum computing experience
  • 3+ years of work experience and PhD. If you have a Masters degree, we expect at least 3 years of relevant quantum computing industrial experience
  • Experience speaking in front of technical audiences, discussing with both internal and external team (English required, French a bonus)
  • Excellent analytical and numerical skills
  • Demonstrable programming experience (Python is a must, Julia a bonus)
  • Team spirit, ambitious, organized, pro-active, sense of urgency… a true pioneer!
  • English: a good professional capability is essential (written and oral).

Bonus points for:

  • Quantum computing industrial experience
  • Software development in a team setting
  • Experience working in a startup environment
  • Supervision of students or interns

Building on over 40 years of academic research, co-founded by Alain Aspect one of the 2022 Nobel Laureates in Physics, PASQAL is on track to commercialize a 1000-qubit quantum processor with scalable neutral atom technology and industrially relevant application development in a full-stack setup. This makes PASQAL one of the world-class key players in this quantum race. Will you join us?

Fine print:

  • PASQAL is an equal opportunity employer. We are committed to creating a diverse and inclusive workplace, because inclusion and diversity are essential to achieving our mission. We encourage applications from all qualified applicants, regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, age, religion or sexual orientation.
  • No third-party recruiters please.
  • Amsterdam onsite position preferred; Paris negotiable.
