Your opportunity
We are looking for an experienced Lead Software Engineer with a focus on UI and to fill the role as an architect and technical leader within our Design System.
You’ll be part of a fully dedicated Design System team and you’ll collaborate with engineers, designers, product managers, and other colleagues to help evolve and improve the design system, an inner-source project used by product teams to build web user interfaces at scale.
This position is in our New Relic One Platform which operates a large-scale micro frontend architecture that empowers all product teams across the company.
BEING AN ARCHITECT AT NEW RELIC
We expect our architects to be leaders, not gatekeepers. Sure, sometimes a leader has to say no, but that isn’t really the heart of the job. A leader should lead. They paint the vision of where we’re going and make sure that everyone has what they need to get there. We hire outstanding engineers. If you can help them see into the future, make decisions that support each other, and avoid mistakes that will be expensive to fix later, then those outstanding engineers can deliver exciting results.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

If you are ready for this job, you’ve spent years building high-availability, high-scale, production systems. You have had plenty of front-line experience in the past, and are now more interested in how sophisticated systems work together than in optimizing that routine. You’ve made mistakes and learned from them, but you’ve also been a part of excellent successes.
What you'll do
  • Build modular, reusable, accessible components for our component library (with React).
  • Partner with designers to achieve the best possible outcome when creating components.
  • Define patterns that can be implemented through code.
  • Enhance our workflows, technical and non-technical.
  • Collaborate with the engineering leadership to build our technical strategy and long term vision.
  • Steer teams toward technical decisions that fit well with the long-term vision.
  • Make sure teams have the right tools for the job at hand and apply the chosen technologies efficiently.
  • Identify and strive to resolve any cross-team and cross-org technical issues, working with other architects and leaders as needed.
  • Advocate for the design system and educate product teams.
  • Communicate, communicate, communicate: Architects serve as the connective tissue between teams and organizations for all technical matters
This role requires
  • Strong collaborative mindset.
  • Broad engineering expertise building production single-page applications with modern JavaScript front-end frameworks (including React).
  • Strong UI knowledge (HTML, JS, and CSS).
  • 5+ years of technical leadership helping engineering teams thrive.
  • Experience building and operating sophisticated UI/UX.
  • Experience with scaling frontend development within a large organization.
  • Deep knowledge on how browsers work, both at their API level and their internals.
  • Good knowledge of algorithms, data structures and ability to debug large scale codebases.
  • Extensive experience with tooling that optimizes code quality, efficiency and developer experience.
  • Experience in mentorship and support for helping level up the skills of colleagues.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Bonus points if you have
  • Masters Degree or PhD.
  • Full-stack knowledge of systems fundamentals.
  • Experience with observability platforms and best practices.
  • Bonus points for being an open source contributor.
  • System Designer skills.

We're looking for bold and passionate people to be a part of our mission to help every engineer do their best work, every day, using data, not opinions, at every stage of the software lifecycle. We'd love to have you apply, even if you don't feel you meet every single requirement. What's most important to us is finding authentic and accountable people who feel connected to our mission and values, not just candidates who check off all the boxes.
