As Badge's Engineering Manager, you will be the person who makes the team hum. You'll foster a culture where engineers do their best work — feeling supported, challenged, and proud of what they ship. Working closely with the Head of Engineering, you'll focus on the health, growth, and performance of the team as much as the output itself.
This is a role for someone who genuinely loves developing people, building trust, and creating the conditions for great engineering to happen — not someone looking to stay hands-on with code.
What You Will Do
This is a hybrid position, while primarily remote the team meets in person in North Vancouver one day a week.
If you are passionate about building great teams, developing the people around you, and creating an environment where engineers can do their best work; we would love to hear from you!
This is a role for someone who genuinely loves developing people, building trust, and creating the conditions for great engineering to happen — not someone looking to stay hands-on with code.
What You Will Do
- Lead, mentor, and grow a team of engineers through regular 1:1s, honest feedback, and active investment in their careers
- Build and maintain a high-trust, high-accountability team culture aligned with Badge's values
- Own the engineering rhythm — standups, planning, retros, tech debt — making sure these are lightweight, purposeful, and actually useful
- Identify and address performance issues early, with care and directness
- Lead hiring with input from the Head of Engineering. You will source, interview, and close great talent
- Remove blockers and shield the team from noise so they can focus and do deep work
- Surface risks and communicate team status clearly to leadership — no surprises
- Continuously improve how the team works together, onboard new members, and share knowledge
- Help manage and prioritize technical initiatives, ensuring they align with business goals
- You have 6+ years of experience in software engineering, with 2+ years managing engineering teams
- You are a people-first leader who knows that great teams don't happen by accident
- You are a strong communicator — direct, empathetic, and clear — whether you're giving hard feedback or rallying the team around a goal
- You have a track record of retaining and developing strong engineers
- You are organized without being bureaucratic — you know which processes add value and which slow people down
- You bring calm and clarity under pressure, and help your team do the same
- You care about engineering craft even if you're not in the code every day
